The Department of Geography is one of the oldest and also the largest in South India. It was established in 1942. It offers M.Sc. Geography, M.Sc. Geoinformatics, Post-Graduate Diploma in Geographical Cartography and Ph.D. programs. The Department had assistance from UGC (SAP and ASIST) and DST (FIST Phase I and II). The Department has been conferred with the status of Centre for Advanced Study (CAS). Its thrust areas are Urban Geography, Regional Development and Geoinformatics. Academic programmes and publications have been undertaken with institutions in India and abroad particularly in the field of urban geography and Geoinformatics.Moreover, the department typically maintains state-of-the-art research facilities, including GIS laboratories and remote sensing equipment, which are instrumental in both teaching and research activities. Collaborations with governmental and non-governmental organizations are common, allowing the department to engage in research projects with real-world applications, such as urban planning, environmental conservation, and disaster management.
